McKinley ALC Action Team Finishes Strong in PEACE Garden
The McKinley ALC Action Team finished their last service learning project on Friday, May 10, 2019 in the PEACE Garden located at McKInley ALC. The Action Team is a student activity opportunity for McKinley ALC students who wish to give back to the community while learning hands-on about various subjects and soft skills related to team participation. McKinley ALC students toured Pattison Farm in St. Cloud where they learned about entrepreneurship, green gardening, and historical perspective about the Century Farm from Dave Morreim, owner. The students were able to choose appropriate flowers to plant in the McKinley ALC Community Peace Garden.They worked together as a team to plan and plant the flowers in the garden utilizing information provided by Morreim regarding plant characteristics and design considerations. Thanks to Richard Adams, Science department, and Dan Hugo, Math department for preparing the soil with their classes and tools.
This event was the culmination of six service projects made possible by a Local Education & Activities Foundation (LEAF) Grant and partnerships with the City of St. Cloud and area non-profits. The McKinley ALC Action Team was able to planand implement several Service Learning projects in conjunction with Science, Math and Career & Technical Education (CTE); including Tech Ed, Business & Work Experience departments throughout the school year. Other projects included St. Cloud Park Department - Munsinger Gardens seedling planting, St. Cloud Water Treatment Plant, Catholic Charities Food Shelf, Salvation Army Bell Ringing, and the St. Cloud Area YMCA. A total of 94 students participated in the projects.
